“The passing of a Young Adult with CF on the TV Show Grey’s Anatomy”
Last night they showed a re-run Episode featuring this Young Adult with Cystic Fibrosis.
Episode: Season 2, Episode 4
Deny, Deny, Deny
Episode Recap:
Synopsis:
Jeremiah, a cystic fibrosis patient, could benefit from Dr. Addison Shepherd's medical knowledge, but her involvement in his surgery could delay her highly anticipated departure from Seattle Grace Hospital, leaving Meredith and Derek's relationship hanging in the balance.
Full Recap:
SGH - Hospital Room - Day - Meredith and Bailey go into a room where a young man is the patient. Bailey says, "I thought I told you I never wanted to see you again." He replies, "That's only cause you're too lazy to learn anything more." Bailey introduces Meredith to the patient, Jeremiah Tate. Jeremiah was one of Bailey's first patients when she was an intern. Jeremiah says that Bailey was clueless on how to treat cystic fibrosis. Jeremiah raises around $100,000 a year for cystic fibrosis running triathlons. After reading his chart Bailey says he's finally admitting to having a little pain. She examines him and presses her hand on his torso. He looks to be in some discomfort. He also says he has been having seizures. He thinks it is his pancreatitis acting up again. Bailey says she'll be back with his results and a plan then asks him where his parents think he is now. He laughs and says New Jersey. Bailey smiles and she and Meredith leave the room.
SGH - Hallway Outside Jeremiah's Room - Day - Meredith asks, "What about his parents?" Bailey says Jeremiah does not like to bother them until he's well or he's going to be discharged. She adds, "He understands his reality he just chooses to ignore it. Denial works for him, Grey."
SGH - Radiology Viewing Rom - Day - Bailey and Meredith are looking at Jeremiah's lab results and X-rays. They note how he has a mass on his mid-epigastrium and diffused enlargement of the pancreas. He's going to need a exploratory laparotomy. Bailey is hesitant because of the state of his lungs, despite running triathlons. Meredith asks what they're going to do. Bailey doesn't know. Addison comes into the room and calls Jeremiah a survivor. Bailey says he's been her patient for five years and refuses to lose him now. Addison says she'll be able to help because she's seen a case like this in a nine year old. Bailey is glad to accept the help, while Meredith isn't too happy about it. She says, "You're a neo-natal specialist. This isn't your area." Bailey shakes her head trying to get Meredith to stop talking. Addison says she did two years of cystic fibrosis genetic research and has seen it all. Meredith says, "Oh."
SGH - Jeremiah Tate's Room - Day - Addison, Meredith, and Bailey are with Jeremiah. Addison tells him when they operate she might have to remove his pancreas and re-route his intestine. Jeremiah asks if Bailey told them his lungs do not do well with anaesthesia. Bailey says, "Don't I always have your back?" Addison tells him if they don't operate he might have multi-system organ failure. Bailey says it's going to be a long hard surgery and his body will go through a lot of stress. He says, "Yeah, but I'm me." Bailey smiles and says, "But you're you." He asks if he doesn't have the operation he is going to die and if they do operate he has a chance of dying. Addison says yes. Jeremiah says, "Well, I like those odds." Jeremiah remains optimistic, that he has lived with his disease for 26 years; if he gets lucky, great. He holds Bailey's hand. And if he does not get lucky, "It's been sweet." Bailey says, "It's gonna stay sweet."
SGH - Bailey/Addison's O.R. - Night - Addison, Bailey, and Meredith are operating on Jeremiah. His body seems to be shutting down. His heart rhythm is becoming erratic. Bailey starts CPR. Addison reminds her they are not to take extraordinary measures. Bailey says she's only doing good medicine and starts to do heart compressions.
SGH - Bailey/Addison's O.R. - Night - Bailey is continuing her compressions on Jeremiah. Meredith offers to take over because Bailey appears to be getting tired. Meredith begins compressions with no improvement to Jeremiah. Bailey pushes Meredith out of the way and begins compressions again. Everyone stops moving. Bailey keeps going and asks why everyone has stopped. Several seconds pass and Jeremiah flat lines. Bailey stops moving, calls his time of death, and leaves the O.R.
SGH - Second Floor Hallway Overlooking Main Lobby/Station - Night - Bailey is making a phone call on her cell phone. It is Jeremiah's mother. Her voice is quivering. She tells his mother that she's very sorry implying that he passed away.
Scottie's feelings about what He watched last night:
Wow, this was surreal to watch after this past Hospital visit and surgery previous to the CHOC Walk in the Park at Disneyland this past Oct. 18th (Thank God I had something I needed to do that I couldn't miss...wink wink). Some of You may recall some of the similar decisions I had to make regarding going through with surgery and the "possible" complications that could arise and concerns with going under anaesthesia and coming out of the surgery Alive due to My bad/decreased lung function... There were many similarities between the character Jeremiah and Myself... I felt His Calm, Love for Life and His Gratitude for the Days that He's Lived... Also, I couldn't help but think that there's a misunderstanding of the word "Denial" in this/His situation... Is it bad to want to live as normal a life and not involve Loved One's as much as possible in the attempts of wanting to be privately Strong and Deal with the difficult issues at hand, and the Hospital stays that go with it? Wanting to be "Normal" and "Strong"?
I will open up to All of You and tell You that I've had the Doctors tell Me that I've been in denial before as well, in the past... My answer to their words & opinions were that "I'm not in denial, I just choose to not involve Everyone in My sick days; I don't want Family and Friends to see Me in bed and have those visions of Me. I'd rather just see Everybody when I get out... People have Lives and they don't need to be going out of their way to come see Me laying sick in bed in the Hospital." That's the way I feel in My Heart, and I'm sure (obviously) I'm not alone in feeling this way... I do understand (through trial & error) that I need to involve My Family and Close Friends in times of surgery's or anytime the situation is a bit more serious (I've learned the hard way) Sorry Mom (She's made Me promise I won't do that anymore)...Oops!!! hehe ;-)
My Whole Life I've tried to be as normal as possible and it's worked for Me; Living The Dream is an extension of All of those feelings... :LTD)( was not even a blip on the radar screen until I turned 40... At the ripe age of 40, I then reflected back and thought to Myself: "Wow, what a Blessed Life I've been able to Live; I need to share this Beautiful "Secret" Way of Life with others that are afflicted in their Lives too." I Lived 40 Years for Scottie; the Rest of My Life, I'm Living The Dream and Sharing the "Gold Key" with Anyone and Everyone that wants to go the distance with Me... "Let's Do This!" :-)
Thank You :LTD)( Family for walking the road of "Enjoying Every Moment of Every Day" together... I'm not promising Myself or Anyone Else Any Extra Days, just "SPECIAL MOMENTS" in the remaining Days of Our Lives...xo
The word Deny & Denial are sometimes used unwisely... I believe the Character with CF portrayed in this Episode "Deny, Deny, Deny", was unfairly misunderstood... I Believe He Lived a Full Life the Best that He could and touched Many Lives; I Believe He was Living The Dream... I Believe this "Character" and portrayal must have been written emulated from a "Real-Life Person/Situation" that occurred... Bless this Young Man and His Family for Living The Dream and Raising So Much Money and Awareness for those that followed Him, that they could Hopefully Live a Better Life too!!! :-)

As they celebrate 35 years of rockin’, KISS made the Honda Center a stop on its KISS ALIVE 35 North American tour. Below written by: J'Net Nguyen
Hurley’s LIVING T)(E DREAM Team participated in Children’s Hospital of Orange County’s 19th annual fundraiser CHOC Walk in the Park at Disneyland on Oct. 18th. With an astounding 70+ walkers and over four thousand dollars raised, the :LTD)( Team, proudly sporting their official LIVING T)(E DREAM logo tee, was easily one of the most recognizable groups in a crowd of 12,000. This was :LTD)(‘s 2nd year walking for our CHOC children.
This year Hurley and LIVING T)(E DREAM were gold sponsors. In addition to providing 15,000 event shirts, they made a profound impact in helping ensure children, regardless of their family’s ability to pay, get world class medical care by helping CHOC raise a total of 1.5 million dollars.

"Kalie and Scottie United to Help Others"
This is a Loving Story that goes back many years before Kalie was born...
Donald Martin (Marty) Garness and Scottie Somers had grown up together from childhood on thru High School and beyond. As Children, Marty knew that Scottie was a little different and was living his life with the terminal disease Cystic Fibrosis. Scottie had CF, but didn't ever act as if he had any disease at all to those around him. It was for this reason that when Marty and Karen (Kalie's Mother) found out they were going to have a Baby Girl, they wanted to name her after their good friend Scottie in Honoring His Life. Scottie actually has had 2 Children named after him, the other is Hunter Scott Gibson, Son of Eric and Courtney Gibson. These 2 Gifts of Love have been Priceless Presents that have left Scottie speechless; He's Very Honored to share names with both Kalie and Hunter. Later, shortly after Kalie's birth, Marty unfortunately was diagnosed with Brain Cancer. Marty had fought this ruthless disease for several years, sometimes seeming as if he was beating it, but in the end, it took His Life...
Many years later after Kalie has grown up, Kalie recently came to Scottie at the Hurley US Open of Surfing Event, to Unite from there on out to help others in Loving Memory of her Daddy, Donald Martin Garness. Scottie has lost a lot of good friends during his journey, Marty being one of them. Scottie carry’s Marty and all the rest of his deceased Loved Ones at the forefront of his being in his journey’s to help terminal Children continue Living The Dream every day regardless of their current conditions.
It was an Amazing Gift of Love after all these years that Kalie came to Scottie saying this, "I wanted to let you know that I think what you're doing with :LTD)( and everything, is amazing. If you ever have any volunteer work I can help with, anything at all, I would love to get involved."
Thank You for being selfless Kalie…

"Warped Tour Date with the Bookers---Meet Kaiya"
This weekend was one of the most magical weekends in my life. I got the opportunity to take the Booker’s, one of Living The Dreams favorite families, out for a full day of rock star treatment. Their day included meeting all their favorite bands, going backstage, going onstage, and walking out with bags and bags of Warped Tour merch donated by all the great people working on the tour. Although they insisted that Living The Dream and Warped Tour gave them a day they will remember for the rest of their lives, little did they know that THEY had changed all of our lives as well. It wasn’t long before Kaiya’s big blue eyes won over the crowd. In just the short time we were all able to spend together, Sarah (4Fini) said, today the Booker’s family just got a lot bigger. Special Ops Joe said Kaiya had changed his life. Special Ops Lauren and Michael are already counting the days to Warped Tour Utah next year when they get to see Kaiya again. An overwhelming sense of love surrounded each and every person in such a way words cannot describe. All of us wished we could make that day last forever. When it came time to say goodbye, tears filled the eyes of each and every person Kaiya had met. All of us had been so inspired by this tiny angel who always had a smile on her face, who laughed all day, and who handed out an endless supply of hugs and kisses to everyone she met. Kaiya taught us all what it’s like to truly be Living The Dream, and for that, we are forever grateful. Thank you Kaiya for shining your beautiful spirit into our lives and lighting up our hearts. I love you K-bug.
This was a Dream Day that :LTD)( was looking forward to All Warped Tour Long… Kaiya aka K-Bug has been in the Living The Dream Family for about 2 years now… The moment I came into Her website, I instantly fell in Love with K-Bug, Shalee and Dustin Booker; they’ve been Family ever-since… We were Excited to Surprise them with a Fun Living The Dream Day at the Warped Tour in UT… Kaiya Loves music, She listens and helps Her Daddy play His guitar (So Cute!)…
If you want to Enrich Your Life, You’ll definitely want to invite the Booker's into it; I did, and it’s been up-hill ever since… The Booker's have a saying “No Bad Days!” That’s a pretty good saying if you ask me… :-)
We Love You Kaiya, Sis Shalee and Brother D…

When I received the email from Scottie Somers that I won my Living The Dream Warped Tour day, I screamed with excitement! Neither my sister Taylor nor I had been to the Warped Tour before, so we were excited and didn’t know what to expect. When we got there we got to park with all the bands buses backstage and skip over all the crowds. We each got an all access pass allowing us to go anywhere we wanted to. We were able to see all our favorite bands like Anti-Flag , 3OH!3, Streetlight Manifesto, Rocket to the Moon, etc. from on stage! Not only that, but we got to meet my favorite singer Jeffree Star and my friends favorite band Underoath! Throughout the whole day we learned a lot about the Living The Dream foundation and what they’re doing for all the kids. It was such an amazing day and we will never forget it . We would like to thank Scottie, Kacie, Lauren, Warped Tour, Living The Dream and everyone else for making this possible. ~Kelly B.

"Warped Tour Date with Justin"
Thank you so much for yesterday! That was honestly one of the coolest things I have ever done in my life and I am so happy I got the opportunity to do it. Like you said it would be, I did meet a ton of amazing people who helped me out throughout the day and made things like keeping hydrated and eating really easy for me! People like Kevin, Lauren, Sarah and Tiffany as well as others who came on and off Kevin's bus. I also got to see all the bands I wanted to see from the stage which was pretty cool because I thought I could only choose one or two bands...but I ended up seeing like 5 or so bands which was awesome! Also, I got to meet some band members like Chris from Less Than Jake, Buddy from Senses Fail and Craig from Chiodos and others too!
Lauren was a HUGE help in letting me do the things my friend and I wanted to do and she was honestly such a great fun person to be around too! At the end of the day Kevin actually invited me back next year which made me feel so welcomed and liked by everyone I met. I cannot tell you how that made me feel because Warped is the event of the summer that I always look forward to. Hopefully Lauren will be there next year too, that way we can hangout again because like you said, she is truly amazing at what she does for the Living The Dream kids like me on Warped! Also, hopefully I was thinking it would be cooler if you could maybe come to Atlanta next year so you, Lauren, Kevin, the rest of the crew and I can all hangout.
So Thank You So Much for giving me this incredible opportunity Scottie, I’m Living The Dream, and I hope to stay in touch,

"Warped Tour Date with Morgan"
Below was written by Julie (Morgan's Mommy):
Hello Scottie,
Thank you again for everything that you did for my little girl. She truly touches everyone’s heart that she meets. I tagged her on myspace with the Living the Dream page. It still touches my heart to see the pics of her and Will (Aiden). I have never seen him smile and have love in his face like when he was hugging Morgan, same with Angel, Nick and Jake. They all loved her and enjoyed spending time with her. Due to a fading economy this wouldn't have been possible without all of your help. Morgan's desire to fight and continue to learn even when the cards are stacked against her is truly an inspiring motivator for all that know her and love her.
I truly do not have a clue how I can ever repay you for this experience....and for putting a smile on my little girl's face.
Juli Wanamaker
I was Excited to meet Morgan in NY because I have never met anyone with Autism before… Needless to say, I was Inspired and Totally Enriched by this Beautiful Little Baby Girl…
Morgan is 5 yrs old and was accompanied by Her Mommy Julie and a Saint of a friend Casey to the Warped Tour. I was told in the morning that Morgan does not take to Men at all and to not take it personal… I talked a lot to Casey and Julie and learned a lot about Autism. I was also turned on to a band I’ve never seen before called Aiden; Julie, Casey and believe it or not , Morgan, All LOVE this Band and its Members… The Guys of Aiden were so nice to the Girls and put big smiles on their faces…
What a Beautiful Little Angel Morgan is…
Oh by the way, Morgan was hugging, kissing and holding my hand by the end of the day; I Believe in Miracles…
Check out the pic in the bottom R corner; do You think She had a Good Day? :-)

Liz and I were walking back towards the :LTD)( tent when we saw 3 EMT’s working on a hurt young Girl. They were applying ice to Her face and I noticed that this Girl really needed water more than anything; I got Her some water. She got Her face smashed up against the bar at the front of the stage and had a big monkey ball under Her eye. Manda was So Upset that She had been waiting for a couple of bands to watch Her favorite band A DAY TO REMEMBER and now that She was hurt, she has lost her place at the front of the stage… There was No Way that I was not going to do something to help Manda as I looked at this Pretty Girls eyes and saw Her heart so sad…

The excitement of finding out I had won a "Fun Day at Warped Tour", with my friend Almendra wasn't nearly as exciting as the actual experience of being on stage with my Favorite bands like; A Rocket To the Moon and The Maine. Just from the First time of meeting Scottie, I knew that my day was going to be a phenomenal day because his energy went through the roof and beyond. The fact that I even got the opportunity to Meet the bands that have inspired me to just get up and go through these difficult times...as well as bands Scottie introduced us to like, A Skylit Drive, was such an unforgettable experience that words can't even describe. I don’t think I’ll ever forget sitting under the LTD tent, listening to Scotties inspirational and motivational stories that will forever stay in our hearts. Such a Beautiful Family!!!!
Juan and I ran around yesterday and saw a bunch of Cool New Bands... Hands Down the band that left Us Both speachless was "The Gallows". Can I just say that Punk Rock is Officially back now that I saw this band; OMG, they'll blow your mind... We also saw Great Bands like:
I set My Friends on Fire
Senses Fail
Underoath
The Maine
Bad Religion
and some bands that we don't want to admit seeing...hehe ;-)
Juan also got to meet some of the band members and they were all Great to Juan...
Thank You to Chris from Saosin for being Awesome to Juan; We went to see Saosin, but went to the wrong Hurley stage unfortionately...
Lauren from the Warped Tour treated Juan like a King; She was So hands on with Him (I was Impressed and Loved it)...
Kevin L. & Family were Very Good to Juan in making sure that His Dream Day was Magical, and guess what? IT WAS!!! :-)
Thanks to All at the Warped Tour...
Thanks to The Bands...
Thanks to Hurley...
and Thank You Juan for letting Living The Dream share in this Special Day with You...
We Love You Little Brother...
